Starch Hydrolysis

The starch hydrolysis test is used in the lab in order to help identify, if a bacteria has the enzyme necessary to break down starch. The potassium iodine turns starch a blue or brown color. If there is no color change in the starch agar. Then the bacteria had the necessary enzyme to break down starch. This helps identify two different strains, one that can metabolize starch and the other that cannot.
